Sneak Peek into Australian Student Visa
(subclass 500)

Australia is a dream destination for students from all over the world, and for good reason. With world-class education, a vibrant multicultural society, and plenty of opportunities to explore, it’s no wonder that so many students choose to study down under. If you’re considering studying in Australia, the Student visa (subclass 500) is your ticket to living, studying, and working in this beautiful country. Here’s everything you need to know to navigate the visa process and make the most of your time in Australia.

What Does the Subclass 500 Visa Allow You to Do?

Study

This is the most obvious perk! The student visa allows you to study at an eligible full-time course at an accredited institution, whether that’s a university, vocational school (TAFE), high school, or even a language course. With Australian education ranked among the best in the world, you’ll be setting yourself up for success while gaining global recognition for your qualifications.

Work

Need extra cash while you study? The Student visa allows you to work up to 48 hours per fortnight during the academic term. This flexibility lets you balance work with your studies while earning some extra income. Plus, if you’re enrolled in a Master’s by Research or PhD program, you’re in luck! You’re allowed to work unlimited hours during your study period, giving you even more opportunities to gain experience and support yourself.

Travel

One of the most exciting parts of studying in Australia is the chance to travel! The Student visa gives you the freedom to come and go as you please within the visa’s validity. Want to explore the Great Barrier Reef, visit iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House, or take a quick trip back home during the holidays? You can do all of that.

How Much Does the Student Visa Cost?

The cost of the Student visa (subclass 500) is AUD 1,600 for the primary applicant. But keep in mind, there are additional costs such as:

Family Members: If you’re bringing your partner or children, they’ll also incur extra charges.

Health Checks & Police Certificates: As part of the application, you may need to undergo health checks, provide police clearance certificates, and biometrics, all of which have their own costs.

Use the Visa Pricing Estimator to get an idea of your total visa costs, but remember it doesn’t include the extra charges for health checks or police certificates.

Bringing Your Family Members

If you plan to bring your partner or children with you, you can include them in your Student visa application. A family member in this case refers to:

Your partner (spouse or de facto partner)

Your dependent children (unmarried and under 18 years old)

Even if your family members aren’t traveling with you immediately, you should declare them in your application. They can apply later through a subsequent entrant application.

Just remember, your family members will also need to meet health and character requirements, which could involve health checks and police certificates.

Visa Processing Time

The processing time for the Student visa can vary depending on factors like the completeness of your application and the complexity of your case. To get an estimate of processing times, you can check the Visa Processing Time Guide. To avoid last-minute stress, make sure you apply well in advance!

A New Ministerial Direction 111 has introduced a two-tier system for processing offshore Student visa applications.

Priority 1 – High applies to students applying to providers in the higher education or vocational training sectors that haven’t reached 80% of their 2025 student intake target, with these applications processed faster.

Priority 2 – Standard applies to providers that have already met or exceeded 80% of their target, with these applications processed at a standard pace.

The Student visa (subclass 500) is a fantastic opportunity to study, live, and work in Australia. Make sure you gather all the necessary documents, stay on top of your visa obligations, and apply well ahead of time to avoid delays.
